The Winter Roots Festival is back! It lands neatly on St. Patrick’s Day weekend, so it’s sure to be a kick-up-your-heels good time. The Festival begins at Ore Dock Brewing Co. at 6 pm with Irish folk dancing instruction. At 7 pm, Tallymoore takes the stage and give us the music to dance to. Pay at the door, $5 for Hiawatha members, $10 for non-members, and children 12 and under are free. On Saturday, a Winter Roots Film Fest happens at Peter White Public Library. Starting at 10 am, there will be 2 award-winning documentary films that feature traditional music as their subject matter; The Search for Blind Joe Death: The Saga of John Fahey is first, followed by Greenwich Village: The Music of a Generation. Last, 2 of Charlie Chaplain’s silent films will give us reasons to laugh while accompanied by Troy Graham, a local musician. That afternoon, come on over to Hiawatha’s community space called The Fold at The Village Shopping Center. At 2:30 there is an Ottawa Valley Fiddling workshop led by April Verch, and at 3:30 a Harmony Singing workshop with April Verch and Joe Newberry. Workshops have a suggested donation of $5/person. Speaking of these two – the Festival concludes with a concert at NMU’s Forest Roberts Theatre at 7:30. Ozark Mountains meet Ottawa Valley in what’s sure to be an enchanting evening of music, dance, and storytelling. Tickets are available at https://nmu.universitytickets.com, at the Berry Events Center, and at the NMU Bookstore. General Public $15 advanced, $17 door, NMU Students/18 and under $10 advanced, $10 door.
