Visiting Master Musicians to present Appalachian Music Concert and Workshop
Master guitar builder and player, Wayne Henderson, and singer/fiddler Helen White, will present a concert and an interactive talk and demonstration workshop on old time Appalachian music the weekend of October 13-14 in Marquette. The events are sponsored by the Hiawatha Music Co-op and the Carroll Paul Memorial Trust Fund of the Peter White Public Library.
Wayne Henderson is a National Heritage Award recipient honored for his craftsmanship as a luthier and his renowned finger-style Appalachian guitar playing. His instruments are coveted worldwide and he sports a long waiting list for his guitars, mandolins, and banjos. Wayne has toured broadly in the U.S., Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. His lightning fast, articulate playing style was influenced by Doc Watson and EC Ball, both close friends and neighbors in the musically rich corner of Southwest Virginia and Northwest North Carolina. His repertoire includes Appalachian fiddle tunes, Carter Family melodies and a few swing and rockabilly standards. He has won more awards at the Galax Fiddlers Convention than any other competitor in its 80-year history.
A singer, fiddler, guitarist and tunesmith, Helen White has toured extensively with Henderson in the U.S. and Europe. Her compositions include works for theater and video projects as well as a Booklist honored recording of original songs for children. Helen is the founder and served as Executive Director of the Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM) program for fifteen years. This important program serves students in 40 mountain counties in 5 states introducing them to their musical heritage through small group instruction in the instruments and music common to the region.
The Concert is 7:00-9:00 pm, Friday, October 13th in the Community Room of the Peter White Public Library. Admission is $5.00 at the door for ages 12 and over and free to children under 12. The free Workshop is 1:00-2:00 pm on Saturday, October 14th, also in the Community Room of the Library. The monthly acoustic community jam will follow the workshop 2:00-5:00 pm at the Library. Participants are encouraged to stay and play, listen or both.
