Warm up in the middle of the Upper Peninsula winter once again with the pleasant sounds of the ukulele.  Yooper Uke Week, will feature performances, group strum and sing, school visits and workshops.  Presenting for the second year, Michigan’s Ukulele Ambassador, Ben Hassenger will lead us all in the pleasant tunes.  Hailing from the Lansing area, Ben has been bringing his favorite instrument to Michiganders for the past 10 years.  Ben was instrumental in starting our very own Yooper Uke Club that meeting monthly on the third Thursday of each month.  All ages are invited to come and learn and share and enjoy the sounds of the ukulele.

Starting at our February Warm Up Wednesday concert series on the 15th, we kick off the Yooper Uke Week at the Ore Dock Brewing Company at 7pm featuring Ben on the ukulele.  He invites all to bring their Ukuleles to join in on the fun. Kids are welcome too and there may be some air-ukes going again this year!

On Thursday February 16th Ben will perform at the North Star Academy at 9am and the Bothwell Middle School in the afternoon.  The community is invited to participate in a Community Strum and Sing at the St. Paul’s Episcopal church on East Ridge and High Street from 7-9pm.  This is a free event and a most enjoyable time to sing, play and meet other Ukulele players in the area.  Loaner ukes will be available.

Friday will have Ben performing at the Marquette Alternative High School in the afternoon.

And the final event will be a Ukulele Workshop on Saturday at the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church from 10-12:30pm.  At this event, you can brush up on your skills or learn to play.  This workshop is co-sponsored by Jim’s Music featuring our own Ukulele master, Jeff Krebs.  Loaner ukes will be available.  Workshop fee is $15, payable at the door.

Ben is no stranger to the UP.  His father and grandfather, both born in Marquette and young Ben spent many hours on the road from Lansing to visit over his lifetime.  His family has a home near Dear Lake in Ishpeming.  Ben hosts numerous festivals, uke groups, workshops and other events across the Lower Peninsula and is pleased to bring the joy of the ukulele to his favorite part of the state.
