5th Annual Yooper Uke Week!

Our 5th Annual Yooper Uke Week was a success despite facing many challenges due to the pandemic. This year, we had to adjust Yooper Uke Week.  We at Hiawatha promoted social distancing and mask-wearing during all events.  (See below for more information on COVID-19 policies from The Blackrocks Brewery).

Our featured performer and instructor, Ben Hassenger presented a series of concerts and workshops and a community strum.  These events took place September 17 – 19, 2020.  Our friends at The Blackrocks Brewery hosted us on their new stage and under their big tent.  There was lots of room for social distancing.   Ben presented and played his Ukulele with our own Jeff Krebs and some other ukulele enthusiasts on the new stage at The Blackrocks Brewery on Third Street in Marquette.  The Thursday night concert kicked off the abbreviated version of Yooper Uke Week.

Thanks to the support of Ben Hassenger Music, Music is the Foundation, Peter White Public Library Carroll Paul Memorial Fund, Blackrocks Brewery and a grant from Arts Midwest, all events will be FREE!

Here is an overview of the 2020 schedule:

Thursday September 17th

Blackrocks Brewery – Marquette, Michigan & Live Stream

6 – 8 pm: Concert with Ben Hassenger, Jeff Krebs & Friends

Hiawatha Music Co-op was pleased to bring two of Michigan’s ukulele enthusiasts from the Lower Peninsula and Upper Peninsula together for this fun outdoor concert on the new stage at Blackrocks Brewery as part of Yooper Uke Week. Ben Hassenger is known as “Michigan’s Ukulele Ambassador”, bringing the joy of the uke to classrooms and communities across the state. Jeff Krebs is a co-owner of Yooptone Music in Marquette and has been the leading champion of the instrument in the area for years. Both are accomplished musicians and songwriters and teamed up to bring you an enjoyable evening of original music along with a selection of popular covers. Joining Ben and Jeff were local musicians, Brent Graves and Doug Kitchel. We hope you enjoyed the beer, the music, and the company on this very special night! Or, tuned into “Live At The Fold” on the HMC Facebook.

Saturday, September 19th

Blackrocks Brewery – Marquette, Michigan & Live Stream
through the HMC Facebook Page

11 am – Noon:  Ukulele 1-2-3 (Beginning workshop for all ages)
Program Description: Yes, you can play the ukulele! Learn the basics of the uke, including parts of the instrument, tuning, beginning chords, and simple songs to get you used to chording and strumming. Bring your own ukulele or use one of our loaners, generously provided by Yooptone Music.

12:30 – 1:30 pm: Too High? Too Low? Transpose (a next-level workshop for all ages)
Program Description: Have you ever had a song you’d really like to play on your ukulele that was either too high or too low for you to sing along to? Learn the easy way to transpose, or change the key of a song, to make it easier to sing and/or play. Ben Hassenger has proven techniques that take the mystery out of this sometimes confusing topic. We’ll take some popular songs and play them in a variety of keys, as well as explore using a capo to change keys while using chord shapes you’re familiar with.

2 – 3 pm:  Community Strum (21 & over only, the bar will be open)
Program Description: Join Ben for a fun ukulele strum of popular songs.

*Hiawatha Music Co-op would like to thank Blackrocks Brewery for opening their outdoor area used for Saturday’s Yooper Uke Week events. Materials were projected and a link to materials provided prior to the weekend.

**Masks were required prior to seating along with recommended social distancing practices.
